v0.0.9.x

Good news! This week i was able to put about 20 work hours into VG. And by that i don’t mean waiting endlessly for renders to finish. I’m talking about actual coding work. It was a really productive week!

Just give me 100 more hours and the Pre-Alpha will be ready to release.

I also updated venusguild.com and changed the version to 0.0.9.x, the polishing update. This time i won’t explain what exactly the x stands for. Maybe i will document that later on.

How are you all doing?

It’s a tough year for most people around the planet. I hope you’re doing good!

Well, the Corona Crisis hit me harder than i’ve expected. As a freelancer i need to work hard to make a living these days. Unfortunately, Venus Guild so far is only a fun project i do in my spare time. Other things in my life are way more important right now. That’s sad, but i hope you understand. I guess many of you can relate to it.

But i’m okay and still can asure you that Venus Guild is not dead!

Just today i was looking at what i’ve got so far and it really makes me excited. The game looks original and sexy, there are some cool mechanics implemented and the whole thing has big potential, imo…

Will the demo be ready this autumn, like i was planning in my last post?

Most likely not! Because i’m still going for my vision, don’t want to hustle through the work with a hot needle, only because i’m far over my deadline due to uninfluenceable difficulties. It’s what it is.

On the other hand i really feel the urge to release the demo into the wild! I can’t wait to see if there are any gamers out there who are interested in my concept of a game – and even willing to support the project with donations/pay-what-you-want and alike. Oh, don’t get me wrong! I really haven’t even thought about the business side of the project. Still need to come up with a product that’s worth supporting.

So let’s get back to work! Stay safe everybody 😉

Thanks (no thanks) Corona

Worldwide, the corona crisis hits people very hard. I hope that you found a way to deal with that shit and that you and your community is still alive and kicking.

I don’t want to make excuses, but of course i had to deal with the pandemic as well, just like everybody else had to. It’s okay, i’m fine, but really needed to worry about many other things than Venus Guild for the past two months.

I’m now planning with a release date (for the demo) this autumn and trying to work out a schedule that will keep me busy over the summer. It’s really strange because the demo is almost ready but there’s still so much stuff to do! Crazy.

So i want to thank you for your patience. I want to realize my “vision” of the Venus Guild Game, no matter what sick viruses will enter the world. I know some of you can’t wait, me neither. I still won’t rush things, okay? 😉

Four months later: 0.0.9

I just finished version 0.0.8 of the Venus Guild Game. I think i’ve solved most graphical issues and have a better idea now of how the VG Demo should look like and which mechanics will be featured – and which won’t.

Now let’s start developing v0.0.9, the content update. It’s another heavy one, but i really hope it won’t take another 4 months to finish. Because, after that, believe it or not, 0.0.10 is the Demo Release!

While i can’t wait to release the first playable demo of Venus Guild, i try to stay cool and don’t speed things up, just to get it done. So let’s talk about 0.0.9 and what its main tasks are:

Mainly i need to create all the character sprites for “Level 3”, tweak this dialog-heavy level and add some more cool twists.

I also want to add a library where all the achievement rewards are going to be listed. The toughest job is to make the ingame questbook work. At the moment it is only generating nightmares 🙂

And of course there will be many still unknown problems appear on the way. Just yesterday i’ve found 3 new bugs, one of them really game-breaking. But you know what? I’ve killed them all!

Some thoughts while the sprite is rendering

As a spare time game dev like me, life gets in the way quite often. I haven’t had time to look at my game in February. But that’s no reason to worry, i’m making the best of it.

I believe that creative breaks are super important to stay fresh, motivated and to refill the batteries. Especially when you’re working alone.

Venus Guild is a free time project after all, so why should i stress myself? That sounds a little bit arrogant, because, when i can believe the stats, there are plenty of people visiting this blog to learn more about VG, and i feel kind of responsible for them. I don’t want to disappoint people.

But i also don’t want to burnout and get into frustration. So i take things easy and look forward to the next programming afternoon.

One thing i can tell you. So far, everytime i look at the game after having a long break, i’m getting very excited and confident that Venus Guild will become a really cool Point & Click Adventure.

I don’t think “omg, what have i done” or “no, i never will be able to finish this”. It’s still a shitload of work until the Venus Guild Demo is done (it really takes much longer than i’ve expected, to be honest), but i really like the way the game is coming along.
